Brooklyn College students volunteer at FOCOS
A group of students from the Brooklyn College in New York, are on two-week volunteer mission to FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital, to support the children’s education unit.
The students who are part of National Black Science Students organization , a group founded by by Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, Founder and President of FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital in 1973, to promote the welfare of black students in the science field. The group comprising 10 students were accompanied by two Professors from the department of African studies at Brooklyn College, Prof. Dane Peters and Prof Lynda Day and will collaborate with education unit for children on admission at FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital.
Speaking at their first meeting with Management of the hospital, Prof.Lynda Day underscored the importance of their visit to the hospital. “Our motivation to embark on this volunteer internship is because we believe FOCOS is making a great impact in the lives of people around the world and Brooklyn College wants to have a strong relationship with FOCOS,” Prof Lynda said.
The decision to undertake this two-week internship was preceded by an earlier visit within the year by Prof.Lynda Day and a student delegation to the hospital.She said their previous visit inspired them to volunteer.
Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei is an Alumnus of Brooklyn College and is considered a mentor by the students volunteering. The delegation will assist the education unit advance the education agenda of the hospital,which is to teach children on admission to the hospital whiles they are away from the classroom.
