Female National Handball player undergoes successful surgery at FOCOS
Ms. Regina Jessica Diame, a regular full back player for Cantonments Youth and the National Female Handball Team has successfully gone through an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (tear in her right knee) surgery on Tuesday 21st of November, 2017, at FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital.
Her debilitating injury, occurred at a training session with her club which rendered her incapable from playing handball for the past 10 months. She became very devastated because she could not play the game she loved. Her misery was compounded by her inability to raise money for her surgery estimated at GHC23, 000. Upon Regina’s arrival at FOCOS she had only be able to raise GHC700 from her personal savings and support from her family. As part of FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital’s commitment to social responsibility and promote sports medicine in Ghana, her surgery was fully sponsored by the hospital.
Her surgery was undertaken by renowned Sports Medicine and Arthroplasty Surgeon from the Hospital of Special Surgery, Dr. Michael Maynard and the FOCOS Orthopaedic team led by Dr. Joseph Ogyaadu. The surgery which took about four hours was successful and she was discharged a day after the surgery. Regina was met by some friends from the National Handball team and some close relatives. Specialists estimate that she can go back to active handball in the next six months.
