FOCOS receives delegation from Brooklyn College
FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital has received a nine-member student delegation from Brooklyn College led by outgoing Chairperson of the African Studies Department, Professor Lynda Day for a five-day visit.
The aim of their visit is to encourage students from the school to volunteer as mentors, empower children and donate items to the children on admission at the hospital. The rationale behind this initiative is to help them in their studies and livelihood, whiles they seek treatment. Some of the things they donated included: pencils, pens, notebook, crayons, stuffed animals and toys.
“We at the African Studies Department at Brooklyn College, have been so interested in Prof. Boachie-Adjei’s work since we got to know him as a graduate of our school,” Prof Lynda said. She further added that she felt it necessary to develop a relationship between her department, the hospital and Dr. Boachie’s work and felt those ties were strengthened after Prof Boachie-Adjei invited them to the fundraising gala at the Mandarin Oriental in New York.
Professor Day, also explained that after their 2017 visit to the hospital, they developed a service learning project with Patricia Ankrah, the resident teacher at FOCOS where the Brooklyn College students assisted her in teaching pediatric patients at FOCOS. This also resulted in their students learning the diverse languages, culture and the Ghanaian healthcare system.
The students were taken on a facility tour by Patricia Ankrah, upon their arrival and later interacted with the children at the Wayne & Claire Heyland Children’s Block. This is Professor Day’s third time of visiting FOCOS with three different student groups.
