Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS) Hosts Maiden Virtual Fundraising Gala

Musculoskeletal conditions, such as spinal deformity, arthritis, clubfoot and bowed legs are leading contributors to disability worldwide, with a resultant negative impact on local health systems and national development efforts. Beside the loss of workplace productivity, the health and broader social cost of musculoskeletal conditions remain significant, considering the high hospital expenditures involved in treating spinal and orthopedic cases.
FOCOS was established in 1998 by world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei with the primary objective of bringing high-quality care and treatment to under-served and vulnerable orthopedic and spine patients in Ghana, who would otherwise not have access to such care. The subsequent establishment of the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital in 2012 further demonstrated the Foundation’s commitment to enriching lives and empowering Ghanaians with quality interventions in health. More than 85% of visiting patients, mostly children and young adults, cannot afford the high cost of treatment and care for various musculoskeletal diseases. FOCOS Hospital has facilitated over 3,100 complex surgical procedures, saving countless lives, especially of children and young adults. This was made possible through various charitable donations from individuals and corporate institutions.
However, there are still close to 4,000 young people unable to walk, work, or enjoy a normal productive life. In spite of all the uncertainty and changing realities this year amidst the prevailing COVID-19 circumstances, we are also reminded of an urgent need to adapt, and most importantly, explore and commit to ways to support the most-vulnerable in society, toward the eventual restoration of hopes and dreams. It is against this backdrop that FOCOS is hosting a Virtual Fundraising Gala on Friday, 20th November, toward sponsoring and reducing the huge backlog of over 4,000 patients awaiting surgery.
The theme for this year’s event is “Making Kindness the New Normal”. This online event presents an opportunity to bring awareness to complex spine challenges, informing and educating about the risks that patients face, and to contribute toward life-saving surgery for the most vulnerable patients.
