Dr. Lyudmila Gross Fernandez, is a product of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana,
Cuba, where she received a Gold Academic Certificate (Honor) as medical doctor in 2006. Her
initial specialty training was Fellowship in Family Medicine at the same university. In 2012, Dr.
Gross concluded her second specialty in Anesthesia and Resuscitation at the same University. As
part of her residency in Anesthesia, she underwent 4-year training at Hermanos Ameijeiras
Hospital, specializing in complex diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases. During these
years, she performed numerous high level and challenging surgeries and has since trained in ICU
management, invasive and non-invasive management of chronic pain, and the management of
pediatric cases.
In 2014, she was introduced to a new culture and environment when she was appointed a full
time lecturer at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Ghana and also as part time
Consultant Anesthesiologist of Tamale Teaching Hospital. As lecturer, she was constructively
involved in the University’s initial Distance Degree Bachelor’s Program in Africa for Nurse
Anesthetists, a collaboration with Duke University of the United States (2014 – 2016). She also
lectured at University of Health and Allied Sciences and the Ho Teaching Hospital in the field of
Medicine and Physician-Assistant Program.
Dr. Gross joined the FOCOS Medical Team in 2018 as a Physician Specialist of Anesthesia, and
recounts it as “an amazing and unique opportunity for her development to be part of a brilliant
group of physicians (Anesthesia & Orthopedics) in Africa and the world at large”.
When not working, she is known to run, listen to motivational speeches and meditate and
spending time with her child.
