Professor Yaw Adu-Gyamfi was one of the first set of medical students (the pioneers) of the University Of Ghana Medical School.

He is a Consultant and Professor of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care and has 39 years of teaching experience. He is former head of Department Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, University Of Ghana Medical School. He taught at the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences, King Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia, and was, for 14 years, the Head of Department of Anaesthesiology as well as the only non-Arab foreigner on the Saudi Council for Medical Specialties that started post graduate medical education in anaesthesia in the Kingdom.

He worked, off and on, as a consultant, at the Central Hospital in Vestras, Sweden, during his vacations for 33 years. This is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Uppsalla University Teaching Hospital and medical school for postgraduate medical training.

Prof Adu-Gyamfi was part of the group that advocated for the setting up of Ghana Postgraduate Medical College, now Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was the founding Chairman of the Faculty of Anaesthesia, a Founding member of the Executive Council and served on the College Council. In recognition of his various contributions he has been honoured with an award for outstanding achievements in Post Graduate Medical Education at the 10^thAnniversary AGSM of the College, in December, 2013.

He once held the positions of President of Ghana Medical Association and President of the Ghana Anaesthesia Society. He served on the Civil Service Council of Ghana, Population Council and the Ghana Aids Commission.

He currently teaches on part time basis at University of Ghana Medical School, is a consultant at FOCOS Hospital, and is supporting the inception of the physician assistants’ anaesthesia training program at the University of Allied Health Sciences, Ho, in the Volta Region of Ghana.

Professor Adu-Gyamfi is happily married to Dr. (Mrs.) Mokowa Adu-Gyamfi and they have grown up children.
