Dr. Kwadwo Poku Yankey, Medical Director of FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital, has emphasized that patient safety must be viewed as an ongoing commitment rather than a one-time event.

His remarks were made during a panel discussion held in Accra to mark this year’s World Patient Safety Day, under the theme “Safe Care for Every Newborn and Every Child,” organised by FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital.

Dr. Appiah noted that while commemorative events are important for raising awareness, the true value of World Patient Safety Day lies in renewing healthcare providers’ long-term commitment to protecting patients from harm.

“Patient safety is not a one-time thing. It’s not just about raising awareness once a year…It is a continuous process, a daily pledge we must renew for the sake of those who depend on us,” he averred.

He added that the day should serve as a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility within the healthcare system to prevent avoidable harm, particularly in ensuring safe care for babies.

The panel members for the discussion were: Dr Francis Addai – Head of Medical Services, FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital, Dr Charlyene Kilba – Paediatrician, Ridge Hospital, Dr Yennusom Maalug – Hospital Director, Pantang Hospital, Claudia Wireko-Brobbey – Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) Nurse Manager, and Dr Agnes Twumasi – Pharmacist, FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital

Call for Safe Care

Established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019, World Patient Safety Day is observed annually on September 17 to promote awareness and global solidarity around improving patient safety. Each year, the day highlights critical issues affecting healthcare quality and safety.

This year’s theme, “Safe Care for Every Newborn and Every Child,” shines a spotlight on the unique vulnerabilities of newborns and children in healthcare settings. It calls for proactive measures to ensure their safety from conception through delivery and beyond.
