We often hear “Sit up straight!” but what if a curved back isn’t just poor posture?

At FOCOS Hospital, we treat a wide range of spinal conditions, and one that often goes unnoticed or misunderstood is kyphosis.

What is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis is a forward rounding of the upper back that may give the appearance of a hunched or slouched posture. While mild cases are common and not always serious, more pronounced or progressive kyphosis can lead to pain, stiffness, among others

There are several types:

  • Postural Kyphosis – Common in teens due to poor posture habits.
  • Scheuermann’s Kyphosis – A structural spinal condition seen in adolescents.
  • Congenital Kyphosis – Present from birth and often requires surgical correction.

Signs to Watch Out For:

  • Noticeable hunch or rounding of the upper back
  • Back pain or fatigue
  • Stiffness in the spine

When to Seek Help

If you or a loved one has a visible curvature, persistent back pain, or concerns about posture, early evaluation is crucial. Our multidisciplinary team at FOCOS provides comprehensive diagnostics, physiotherapy, bracing, and surgical care when needed.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters:

Like scoliosis, untreated kyphosis can worsen with time. Early intervention often leads to better outcomes and for many, treatment may not require surgery.
